Spelling Note

elusive, illusive, or allusive? Do not confuse the spelling of elusive, illusive, and allusive, which sound similar. Elusive, the most frequent of the three adjectives, means "difficult to catch, find, understand, or remember," as in an elusive thief. Illusive is another word for illusory, meaning "consisting of an illusion." Allusive means "making an allusion" or "characterized by allusions," as in an allusive remark.
