eclipse

Definition:
 
1. obscuring of astronomical object: the partial or complete hiding from view of an astronomical object, e.g. the Sun or Moon, when another astronomical object comes between it and the observer

2. loss of light: a loss or blocking of light

3. decline: a loss of status, power, or favor
the eclipse of supply-side economics

1. outdo somebody or something: to become more successful, powerful, or popular than something or somebody
a performance that eclipsed all that went before

2. astronomy hide astronomical object: to cause a total or partial obscuring of another astronomical object

3. cast shadow on something: to block the light falling on something, or cast a shadow on it
