Cultural Note

The Divine Comedy, an epic poem (1307?-1320?) by Italian poet Dante Alighieri. Generally considered to be Dante's masterpiece, it is an account of the poet's journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise, rich in historical, scientific, and philosophical allusion. The poet Virgil, representing Reason, is Dante's guide in the first two sections of the work; in the final section his guide is Beatrice, an idealization of the girl he loved in his youth.
