Definition:
 
1. pronunciation mark: a mark (¨) placed above a vowel to show that it should be pronounced. It may be above the second of two adjacent vowels to show that it is a separate syllable, as in the word "naïve," or above a single vowel, as in the name "Brontë."

2. pause in poetry: a pause in a line of poetry that occurs when the end of a metrical foot coincides with the end of a word
