Use denote when you want to say "to mean," "to refer to," or "to signify": That word denotes "life" in Spanish.For our purposes, the word "corporation" will denote the XYZ Foundation.The tiny points of light in the sky denote the Big Dipper. Use represent when you mean "to symbolize something else": The red maple leaf represents [not denotes] Canada.
