Definition:
 
1. make something less intense: to lessen the intensity of something such as pain or sound
The snow deadened the sound of their footsteps.

2. desensitize somebody or something: to make something or somebody less sensitive to pain or other stimuli
A local anesthetic will deaden the nerves.

3. make something less resonant: to make an area soundproof or less resonant
