transitive and intransitive verb 
Definition:
 
1. get darker or color something darker: to become darker, or make something darker
I mixed a little blue and brown with the red to darken it.

2. become unhappy or make somebody unhappy: to become unhappy, less hopeful, or angry, or cause such a change in somebody or something
The outlook has darkened considerably since the last update.
