Cy·prus [ sprəss ] island country in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. Since 1974, it has been partitioned between the Greek Cypriot south and the officially unrecognized Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. It became an independent member of the British Commonwealth in 1961 and a member of the European Union in 2004.Greek Currency: euro, Turkish lira. Capital: Nicosia.
