cymbal

cym·bal [ símb'l ] (plural cym·bals)

noun
Definition:

percussion instrument: a circular brass percussion instrument played with a stick or in pairs by striking them together

[Pre-12th century. Directly or via French< Latin cymbalum< Greek kumbalon< kumbē "bowl, cup"]

Spelling Note

cymbal or symbol? Do not confuse the spelling of cymbal and symbol, which sound similar. A cymbal is a round brass percussion instrument, as in play the cymbals. Symbol, the more frequent of the two words, denotes an object, sign, or character that represents something else, as in mathematical symbols.
