hard-shelled animal: an invertebrate animal with several pairs of jointed legs, a hard protective outer shell, two pairs of antennae, and eyes at the ends of stalks. Lobsters, crabs, shrimp, crayfish, water fleas, barnacles, and wood lice are crustaceans. Subphylum Crustacea.
