1. contradict or oppose something: to say something that contradicts or opposes what somebody has said

2. do something in opposition: to do something in opposition to what somebody else is doing, so as to make it less effective

3. punch opponent in return: in boxing, to defend yourself against a punch from an opponent, and deliver a punch in return
