Definition:
 
1. transitive verb state something: to argue or claim that something is true

2. intransitive verb compete: to compete for something, especially a prize or trophy
the teams contending for the cup

3. intransitive verb struggle or deal with something: to fight with, struggle against, or deal with somebody or something
Their lawyers have a number of awkward issues to contend with.

4. intransitive verb debate with somebody: to debate or dispute with somebody ( literary )
