col·league [ kó lg ] (plural col·leagues)

noun
Definition:

fellow worker: a person somebody works with, especially in a professional or skilled job

[Early 16th century. Via French< Latin collega "person somebody commissions with" < legare "commission, entrust" < lex "law"]

col·league·ship noun

Word Usage
colleague or compatriot?

Students often confuse colleague, which means "a fellow worker," with compatriot, which means "a fellow citizen of a nation" and "a fellow member of a group, especially a military or political group." In formal writing use: The Chief Justice and her colleagues [not compatriots] handed down a unanimous ruling.
