area with distinct climate: an area of the Earth's surface that possesses a distinct type of climate. There are eight major climatic zones, roughly demarcated by lines of latitude. These consist of the tropical zone near the equator, two subtropical and two temperate zones, one boreal zone in the northern hemisphere, and the two polar ice caps.
