Definition:
 
1. slope to drop things down: an inclined channel or passage that something can slide down

2. leisure children's slide: a children's slide in a park or swimming pool

3. snow-covered slope: a snow- or ice-covered slope or channel for sports such as tobogganing or bobsledding

4. slope or drop on watercourse: a waterfall, rapids, or steep descent in a river or stream

5. agriculture sloping passage for animals: a narrow passageway through which animals are driven to be branded, sheared, loaded, dipped, or sprayed

Spelling Note

chute or shoot? Do not confuse the spelling of chute and shoot, which sound similar. Chute is chiefly used as a noun, denoting a slope to slide or drop things down; it is occasionally used as a verb, meaning "send down a chute." Chute is also a short form of parachute. The word shoot is a verb or noun with a wide range of meanings and uses. As a verb it can mean "fire a weapon at somebody or something," "move fast," "take a photograph of somebody or something," "attempt to score a goal," etc., as in shoot a pheasant, he shot off down the road. As a noun it can mean "a new plant growth," "an occasion for photography," or "a hunting party."
