Central African Republic

Cen·tral Af·ri·can Re·pub·lic [ sèntrəl àffrikən ri púbblik ] landlocked country in central Africa. Formerly part of French Equatorial Africa, it became independent in 1960. It is bordered by Chad, Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Republic of the Congo, and Cameroon.

Currency: CFA franc.
Capital: Bangui.
Population: 3,683,538 (2003).
Area: 622,436 sq km (240,324 sq mi.) 
Former name  Ubangi-Shari until 1958
