infectious epidemic disease: an infectious fatal epidemic disease, caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis transmitted by fleas that have previously bitten an infected animal or person, and characterized by fever, chills, and the formation of swellings buboes. In the 14th century, an extensive epidemic of it occurred, known as the Black Death. In modern times, infection is limited and sporadic and can be treated successfully with antibiotics.
