Cultural Note

Bleak House, a novel (1852-1853) by British writer Charles Dickens. Among the strands of the complex plot are the interminable court case of Jarndyce and Jarndyce; the guilty secret of Lady Dedlock and the tragic consequences of her discovery that her illegitimate daughter, Esther Summerson, is still alive; and Esther's relationship with her kindly and devoted guardian John Jarndyce. The novel combines the excitement of a murder mystery with a bitter satire of the legal system.
