1. city in northern Alabama. Just south of the Appalachian Mountains, it is the largest city in the state. Population: 229,424 (2006).
2. city in southeastern Michigan, just southeast of Pontiac. It is a northwestern suburb of Detroit. Population: 19,081 (2005 estimate).
3. second largest city in England and a major industrial center. Located in the West Midlands, it has three universities and two cathedrals. Population: 976,400 (2001 estimate).
