1. protective clothing: a small piece of material fastened under a child's chin to protect the clothing while eating

2. part of garment: the front part of a pinafore, apron, or pair of overalls that covers the chest

[Late 16th century. Probably <bib "drink frequently" < Latin bibere "to drink"]

somebody's best bib and tucker somebody's finest clothes (informal)
