Beth·le·hem [ béthli hèm, béthlee əm ]
1. town in the West Bank near Jerusalem. Part of Israel since 1967, it has been administered by the Palestinian Authority since 1995. Thought to be the birthplace of King David and Jesus Christ, it is regarded as a holy city by Christians. Population: 21,947 (1997 estimate).
2. city in eastern Pennsylvania on the Lehigh River. It is a major steel-manufacturing center. Population: 72,704 (2006).
