Cultural Note

The Star-Spangled Banner, a patriotic song (1814) with lyrics by writer Francis Scott Key set to music by English composer John Stafford Smith. Penned by Key after he had witnessed the successful defense of the city of Baltimore by U.S. troops against a British attack in 1814, it soon became a popular patriotic song. It was adopted as the national anthem of the United States on March 3, 1931.
