backup

back·up [ bák ùp ] (plural back·ups)

Definition:
 
1. support: support or assistance from other people, e.g. support from the supplier of a product when it breaks down

2. reinforcements: reinforcements to help personnel already committed, especially police officers
The officers at the scene are calling for a backup.

3. substitute or reserve: a substitute or reserve that can be used if the thing normally used fails

4. security copy: a copy of computer data that is stored, e.g. a copy stored on a floppy disk

5. copying: the procedure for copying computer data with which somebody is working
The backup is done automatically every morning.

6. traffic holdup: a buildup or stoppage of traffic caused by an obstruction, e.g. an accident or road construction
