Definition:
 
1. strong reaction: a strong adverse reaction among a group of people to an event, development, or trend, especially one that benefits another group

2. violent backward movement: a sudden violent backward jerking movement, e.g. when a cable breaks under strain

3. mechanical engineering recoil between machine parts: a jarring recoil that sometimes occurs when worn or badly fitting parts of a mechanism come together
