1. city on the western bank of the Savannah River, in east central Georgia. It was previously known as Fort Cornwallis. Population: 197,842 (2002 estimate).
2. capital city of Maine and vacation resort, in the southwest of the state, on the Kennebec River. Population: 18,551 (2002 estimate).
