Definition:
 
1. intransitive verb move upward: to go upward, usually vertically or into the air

2. transitive and intransitive verb climb something: to climb up something such as a hill or stairway
The climber let down a rope so the others could ascend.

3. intransitive verb lead upward: to rise or lead to a higher level

4. intransitive verb rise to higher career position: to rise through the ranks to a higher status
She ascended through the ranks all the way to general.

5. transitive verb take up position: to succeed to an important position, especially as a monarch ( formal )
ascend the throne
