analogous

a·nal·o·gous [ ə nálləgəss ]

adjective
Definition:

1. similar: similar in some respects, allowing an analogy to be drawn

2. equivalent but appearing independent: describes body parts and organs that have equivalent functions but that have evolved independently of one another in different plants or animals. The wings of birds, bats, and insects are analogous.

[Mid-17th century. < French analogue or Latin analogus< Greek analogos< analogon "in due ratio" < ana "according to" + logos "ratio"]

a·nal·o·gous·ly adverb
a·nal·o·gous·ness noun

Word Usage

Analogous, correctly used, should include a notion of analogy, that is, of similarity in some particular respects: The Commission has set up guidelines for defense attorneys that are analogous to those for prosecutors. It is better to avoid it when the comparison is only general and when more straightforward words like similar, equivalent, comparable, or corresponding serve just as well, as in The new system is comparable [not analogous] to that used in the electronics industry.
