1. giver of money as charity: in former times, somebody who distributed alms to the needy, especially on behalf of a church, monastery, or wealthy family

2. U.K. hospital social worker: formerly, somebody affiliated with a hospital as a social worker for its patients

[15th century. Alteration of obsolete aumener, via Old French aumoner< ecclesiastical Latin eleemosynarius "connected with alms" < eleemosyna (see alms)]
