city in eastern Virginia on the Potomac River, south of Washington, D.C.
Population: 136,974 (2006).

city and Mediterranean seaport in northern Egypt, on the delta of the Nile River. Founded by Alexander the Great in 332 bc, it was a major cultural center of the ancient world, renowned for its library.
