Definition:
 
1. transitive and intransitive verb offer advice: to offer a personal opinion to somebody
I won't choose until somebody can advise me.

2. transitive verb recommend something: to give advice to somebody on a subject or course of action
We were advised against staying longer.

3. transitive verb inform somebody: to tell somebody about something

4. intransitive verb U.S. seek advice: to seek advice or information

Word Usage

The use of the verb advise to mean "tell somebody about something" is often regarded as jargon and is best avoided in formal usage: Please advise us of [better: let us know] your new address.I will advise them [better: inform them] of the new time of the meeting.
