Word Usage
adversarial or adversative:

Not until the 20th century did adversarial begin to come into use: He took an adversarial position at the hearing. Formerly, adversative was the only possible choice. Now, however, adversarial is standard usage and adversative is rarely used except in reference to grammar and such adversative conjunctions as but and yet, and in connection with the stringent methods employed by certain military schools: "This 'adversative education,' as they call it, is designed to break the cadet of flabby, undisciplined habits acquired early in life and to remake him into a soldier."
