1. transitive and intransitive verb subsidize something: to agree to provide funds for something and to cover any losses
The tour was underwritten by an electronics company.

2. transitive and intransitive verb issue insurance: to insure somebody or something by accepting liability for designated losses, or to be in the business of doing this

3. transitive and intransitive verb agree to buy unsold securities: to guarantee the sale of an issue of securities at a fixed price
