Cultural Note

One Hundred Years of Solitude, a novel (1967) by Colombian writer Gabriel García Márquez. It recounts a hundred years in the lives of the Buendía family, founders of the town of Macondo in Colombia, a story that mirrors the history of the nation. Marquez's skillful use of fantasy and myth to convey the depth of his characters' experiences makes this a key work in the magic realism school of literature.
