2. encouragement for activity: encouragement of the growth or development of something

3. something that promotes: something such as an advertising campaign that is designed to promote a product, cause, or organization

4. marketing process of promoting: the act or process of making a product, cause, or organization more widely known or more successful

5. advance into higher division: advance by a soccer team or player into a higher division of a league

6. chess exchange of pawn for superior piece: in chess, the act of exchanging a pawn for a more powerful piece, usually a queen, when it reaches an opponent's end of the board
