profit or prophet? Do not confuse the spelling of profit and prophet, which sound similar. Profit is a noun and verb referring to financial gain, benefit, or advantage: We made a profit of $100 on the transaction.They profited from the umpire's decision. The word prophet is only used as a noun, denoting somebody who foretells the future, as in an Old Testament prophet, prophets of doom.
