Definition:
 
1.  (plural pi·az·ze [ pee tsə, pee t say ] or pi·az·zas) Italian public square: a large open square, especially one in an Italian town

2. open-sided passageway: a covered passageway that has arches on one or both sides and is usually attached to a building, e.g. along the inner walls of a courtyard or quadrangle

3. regional porch: a veranda or porch, especially one attached to a house ( dated )

Regional History

Used to mean "porch," piazza is an old-fashioned term found in the northeastern and southeastern states, but not in the Midland territory. In the Carolinas, the use of this term, together with earthworm and press peach, marks the northern limits of Southern speech. See also veranda.
