Word Usage

Parameter, which has special meanings in science, mathematics, and statistics, has taken on a general sense "a limiting factor," as in had to adhere to all the parameters of tax law with regard to the establishment of family trusts and foundations. This meaning, along with the others, is acceptable. Some people, however, object to yet another general meaning of the word, "a distinguishing feature or notable characteristic," as in An important parameter in their culture is vegetarianism, where characteristic or feature would be more precise and less pompous. Avoid confusing parameter with perimeter ("boundary"): Guards patrolled the perimeter [not parameter] of the military installation.
