Cultural Note

The Naked and the Dead, a novel (1948) by Norman Mailer. Set on a Pacific island during World War II, it is both a powerful account of the experience of war and, through its presentation of the conflicting political and philosophical views of the principal characters, a portrayal of some of the tensions in contemporary U.S. society. It was made into a movie by Raoul Walsh in 1958.
