Cultural Note

The Mayor of Casterbridge, a novel (1886) by British writer Thomas Hardy. It is the tragic story of Michael Henchard, a laborer whose success in business raises him to the position of mayor of his town, but who then loses his fortune as a result of a petty dispute with his assistant. A rich character study, it is also a revealing portrait of contemporary rural mores.
