Cultural Note

The Magnificent Ambersons, a movie (1942) by director Orson Welles. Based on a novel by Booth Tarkington, it is set in the U.S. Midwest during the Industrial Revolution and contrasts the declining fortunes of the upper-class Amberson family with the rise of a young entrepreneur. Despite suffering savage cuts at the hands of the studio, it is regarded as one of Welles's masterpieces.
