loath, loth, or loathe? Do not confuse the spelling of loath (or its variant loth) and loathe. Loath (or loth) is an adjective meaning "unwilling or reluctant" and is usually followed by to, as in I was loath [or loth] to admit it. It is also occasionally encountered in the fixed phrase nothing loath (or nothing loth). Loathe is a verb meaning "dislike intensely": I loathe this kind of music.
