last [ last ] CORE MEANING: a grammatical word indicating that something is the most recent or final of all

Cultural Note

The Last of the Mohicans, a novel (1826) by writer James Fenimore Cooper. The most popular of Cooper's evocative accounts of frontier life, it is set in mid-18th-century North America during the wars between Britain and France. It describes the attempts of frontiersman Hawkeye and his Mahican companions, Chingachook and Uncas, the last of their people, to protect a British family from the French and their Huron allies.
