1. nonmetallic crystalline halogen element: a poisonous, dark gray to purple-black, lustrous, nonmetallic crystalline element in the halogen family. Source: brine. Use: germicide, antiseptic, preparation of dyes, pharmaceuticals, tinctures, isotopes in medicine and industry.
