1. something that shows what conditions are: something observed or calculated that is used to show the presence or state of a condition or trend

2. measuring instrument: an instrument or gauge that measures something and registers the measurement

3. something giving information: something such as a light, sign, or pointer that gives information, e.g. about which direction to follow

4. ecology 
Same as  indicator organism


5. chemistry chemical showing something: a substance that shows the presence or concentration of a specific material or chemical, e.g. litmus
