1. block to progress or agreement: a point at which no further progress can be made or agreement reached
Talks have reached an impasse.

2. road without exit: a road or passage that has no way out or through, e.g. a dead end or a blockage caused by an accident

[Mid-19th century. < French< im- "not" + passer (see pass)]
