Definition:
 
1. protect somebody or something: to protect somebody or something against danger or loss by being vigilant and taking defensive measures

2. prevent somebody from escaping: to watch over somebody held captive and prevent him or her from escaping
Two MPs were guarding the prisoner.

3. control passage through place: to watch over and control passage through an entrance or across a boundary
All of the mountain passes are guarded by troops.
