guard cell (plural guard cells)

Definition:
 
plant cell: either of two specialized cells bordering pores in the epidermis of leaves that move to control the size of the aperture in response to changes in water levels. The guard cells and pore are called the stoma, and are situated on the underside, and sometimes the top side, of leaves and on young shoots.
