Definition:
 
1. cereals: cereal crops

2. small seed: a small hard seed

3. tiny single piece: a tiny individual piece of something such as sand or salt

4. small amount: a tiny amount of something

5. pattern in material: the arrangement, direction, or pattern of the fibers in wood, leather, stone, or paper, typically aligned along a single axis

Word History

The Latin word granum "seed," from which grain is derived, is also the source of English filigree, garner, granary, grange, granite, gravy, ingrain, and pomegranate. Its Indo-European ancestor in turn gave rise to English corn1.
