Definition:
 
1. impose something on somebody: to force somebody to accept something undesirable
always foists the dirty jobs on me

2. give somebody something inferior: to give somebody something inferior on the pretense that it is genuine, valuable, or desirable
tried to foist it off on us as an antique

3. insert something surreptitiously: to introduce or insert something surreptitiously

[Mid-16th century. Probably < Dutch dialect vuisten "hold in your hand" (as when hiding dice) < Middle Dutch vuist "fist"]
