floe

floe [ flō ] (plural floes)

noun
Definition:

geography
Same as  ice floe

[Early 19th century. Probably < Norwegian flo "layer"]

Spelling Note

floe or flow? Do not confuse the spelling of floe and flow, which sound similar. Floe is only used as a noun, denoting a sheet of floating ice. The word flow is much more frequent in general usage and can be used as a verb or a noun, referring to free or smooth movement, for example, of water or traffic: Blood flows through the veins. There has been a steady flow of refugees across the border.
